Mayor Topbaş: We have carried out the counter-measures against earthquake risks

We also formed gathering areas, made the detection of tent areas and composed areas to carry the patient-carrying ambulances by the sea” he said.</span>

Mayor Mr. Topbaş pointed out that the studies were being done by specialists about  what needed to be required during the earthquake to eliminate the negative results of a possible earthquake which would be taken place in Istanbul, “We built about one-hundred heliport. We also formed gathering areas, made the detection of tent areas and composed areas to carry the patient-carrying ambulances by the sea” he said.

Mr. Kadir Topbaş, the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, answered the questions from members of the press after the grand opening of the Istanbul University Oncology Institute Department of Radiation Oncology's new building and new devices to be put into service at the hospital. While answering the question of one of the jornalists regarding the tsunami and the measures taken by the city’s Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM), Mayor Mr. Topbaş continued:

The possible earthquake scenarios have been written from a different perspective for Istanbul. The studies were completed by specialists regarding what is needed in order to eliminate the negative results of a possible earthquake which could take place during an earthquake in Istanbul. We have built about one-hundred heliports. The scenarios are ready for gathering people into certain areas as well as where to place tent areas and composed areas in order to carry patient-carrying ambulances by the sea. These studies were completed by the Directorate of Earthquake and Ground Analysis and were submitted to the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM). As we add material we update the report from time to time. We also update the regions added to the city.”

Mayor Mr. Topbaş gave the following answer to a question concerning the specified “safe routes” for a possible earthquake situation: “Especially Istanbul’s main arteries and large roads should be open, people should not park their cars on the roads. These roads should be more active and open. It is very important for recue teams’ vehicles and equipment to arrive there on time. On the other hand, there are the occupied areas, such as public markets in every town which our metropolitan sub-provincial municipalities in whose parking lots or town squares people can be gathered or to which they can be brought. That which needs to be done in every scenario has already been completed These studies still continue and they are being completed in a planned framework. 

Mr. Muammer Güler, the governor of Istanbul, specified that the governorate of Istanbul, the Istanbul Metroplitan Municipality, and the other institutions have completed numerous works and studies regarding a possible eartquake in Istanbul and mentioned that a briefing will be given to the Parliamentary Research Commision of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in a meeting to be held at the Istanbul Governorate on February 19, 2010 at 2:30 PM.
