Mayor İmamoğlu: "Istanbul Always Energetic"

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues its activities for the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day on its 102nd anniversary. Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu watched, together with his wife Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, the show matches by national players held on the tennis court on a platform located in the middle of the Golden Horn. The players competing in the panoramic and magnificent view of Istanbul received their awards from the İmamoğlu couple. Participating in the matches together with his wife, İmamoğlu expressed his feelings as “We are in a city with high energy. We wanted to make this felt. May its energy be always up like this”.

The IMM arranged the platform located on the Golden Horn as a tennis court for the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day celebrations. Special show matches were organized with the participation of national players, accompanied by the magnificent panoramic view covering the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the historical peninsula. Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu watched the show matches with his wife Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu and their son Semih İmamoğlu.

Vibrant Moments in the Middle of the Golden Horn

The first show match was played in the women's category, between national players İpek Öz and Berfu Cengiz, and resulted in Cengiz's 5-4 victory. The winner of the men's competition between Mert Naci Türker and Umut Akkoyun was Akkoyun with a score of 4-2. The show matches were directed by international tennis referee Eylül Benli. Cengiz, Akkoyun, Öz, Türker, and Benli took their trophies from the İmamoğlu couple who presented a special edition of Atatürk’s book “Nutuk” (Speech), the book “İlham Veren Adımlar” (Inspiring Steps), and the trophy cup. After the awards presentation, the İmamoğlu couple played with both the winners and the losers one by one, thus participating in the show matches which had colorful moments against the magnificent view of Istanbul. Afterwards, İmamoğlu couple and the players singing marches with Turkish flags in their hands carried the excitement of the day to its peak.

Match First, Comments Later

Following playing in the show matches, İmamoğlu commented breathlessly about the celebration day and the court positioned in the middle of the Golden Horn: “It was wonderful with young people. Was wonderful, I swear. It suits the May 19th. This place is to stay in the middle of the Golden Horn for a while. There are events. We are open to offers. I too play tennis; this court can be open for a while to Istanbulites and non-governmental organizations. They can call Spor Istanbul Inc, and say, ‘We are participating in such donation campaign’. It may be art, culture, sports, solidarity, whatever. This was fun. We thank our national players for their special participation. We are in a city with high energy. We wanted to make this felt. May its energy be always up like this.”
