Istanbul Celebrates 97th Independence Anniversary in Taksim

The 97th anniversary of the liberation of Istanbul from enemy occupation was celebrated with an official ceremony held in front of Taksim Republican Monument.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu signed the Book of Honor, expressing his feelings as follows: “As positive citizens of a modern and strong Republic of Turkey, we are working hard to take care of Istanbul and make this unique city happy and successful and to carry the city to the position it deserves. Today, we commemorate those who gave us this determination and inspiration and those who added value to Istanbul with gratitude.”

Istanbul was invaded on March 16, 1920, occupied for 4 years, 10 months and 23 days and saved by Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on October 6, 1923.

The 97th anniversary of the Istanbul's liberation from enemy forces was started in Taksim Square with the laying of a wreath at Taksim Republic Monument then there was a moment of silence with the participation of Mr. Ali Yerlikaya
the Governor of Istanbul; Mr. Ekrem Imamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul; General Musa Avsever, the commander of the First Army and representatives of political parties and associations, soldiers and police officers. Then, it followed by a reading of the National Anthem.

In his message, Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu wrote the following in the monument special book: "Happy anniversary of the liberation of our beautiful city Istanbul from enemy occupation. The liberation of Istanbul is one of the most valuable expressions of our nation's struggle for wealth and honor, freedom and independence. Istanbul is entrusted to us by Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the beloved heroes of the War of Independence.  As positive citizens of a modern and strong Republic of Turkey, we are working hard to take care of Istanbul and make this unique city happy and successful and to carry the city to the position it deserves. We commemorate those who gave us this determination and inspiration and those who added value to Istanbul with gratitude and affection.”

The ceremony continued with a performance by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality 'Mehter' Janissary Band and performance artists, located at certain points of the area, and who revived the symbol names of the War of Independence with their special makeup. Following the ceremony in Taksim Square, Mayor Imamoğlu walked to the Istanbul Chamber of Industry's building in Odakule where he attended the Istanbul Development Agency’s October Board Meeting.

While walking on the street, Istanbulites showed great interest in Mayor Imamoğlu, who let them take photographs with himself.
