Bosphorus Cup Istanbul Regatta to be Held at Weekend

In collaboration with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), the 19th edition of the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup will be held in Istanbul on September 26 and 27, 2020.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues to improve the city's sports culture and brand value with the events it organizes or supports every year. "Istanbul is Sailing," is the tagline of the Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup, which will take place over two days, from September 26 to 27. The mission of this regatta is to increase the awareness of the sport of sailing amongst Istanbulites and since its start in 2002, it has become a popular competition for city dwellers to come out and enjoy the view and after football, is considered to have the highest number of spectators in the city second only to the national sport of football.

The race will last for two days and take place in two different areas, on September 26 in the Bosphorus Strait and on September  27 in the Sea of Marmara.

The first race will be held in the Bosphorus on September 26 and it will start from the main campus of Bahçeşehir University (BAU) on the edge of the Bosphorus in Besiktaş, very close to the Dolmabahce Palace and the boats will go around the upwind mark in Anadolu Hisari and return to the finish line that will be off the shore of the Çırağan Palace.

The second race will take place between Caddebostan and the famous Princess Islands of Istanbul. On Sunday, September 27, the Bouy Races will resume off the shore of Caddebostan.

Around 50 boats with 500 sailors will sail in good northerly winds, giving them enough speed to beat the heavy Black Sea current.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, apart from Turkey, the sailing teams from Bulgaria and Romania will compete in the race this year.

The 19th Turkcell Platinum Bosphorus Cup will be held under coronavirus measures. Warning signs will be installed on all boats for the races and health and safety measures will be taken seriously. Each participant will have their visors, masks, disinfectants and gloves in the race, so that sailors can disinfect their boats frequently. They will get on their boats after taking temperature measurements and pay keep social distances on their boats.

The race will be broadcast live on the official Instagram account of “Go Turkey” and https://bosphoruscup.org/
