Forest Fire in Heybeliada Under Control

A forest fire, which started on Heybeliada, was brought under control after hours of efforts with the contribution of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). The cooling efforts are still underway.

The Adalar (Islands) Municipality of the IMM first responded to the fire, which broke out at 17.30 P.M.

The fire brigade teams of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), Regional Directorate of Forestry and the personnel of Military Academy joined the extinguishing efforts. While two helicopters were used, residents also joined the efforts by carrying water with cans, buckets and plastic bottles.

The fire was brought under control by the evening hours yesterday at 7:45 pm and around 5–6 hectares were harmed. However, cooling efforts were still underway in the late morning hours.

The IMM team, consisting of 1 landing craft, 17 vehicles and 51 personnel, participated in extinguishing the fires.

Residents with training in fire fighting were also called on by the Adalar (Islands) Municipality, to aid extinguishing efforts.

At least five helicopters, two tanker planes and 21 water trucks, including from the Regional Directorate of Forestry and the personnel of Military Academy, were deployed to the region to battle the fire. 

Heybeliada is one of the four Princes' Islands in the Marmara Sea and the second largest of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, famous for their natural forests.
