Mayor Imamoğlu : “Happy May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day and Qadr Night (Laylat-ul-Qadr)”

Despite the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) did not neglect celebrating May 19th Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, normally celebrated with large events every year.

The IMM celebrated the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth, and Sports Day, which marks the beginning of the country’s War of Independence and the emergence of modern Turkey.

As part of the show, about 100 fireworks were set off from the coasts of the innercity neighbourhoods near the coasts of the Bosphorus, especially Ortakoy and Kuzguncuk, creating a visual feast in the skies of Istanbul.

Speaking live from his social media accounts before the show began, Mayor Mr. İmamoğlu said, “Hopefully, we want to be together during and after Ramadan holiday and next year, we would like to celebrate May 19 with even more great events in this beautiful city. I wish you happy May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day and may our Kadir Night be blessed.”

The light and fireworks show, which started at 21.05 pm was broadcast live on the social media accounts of IMM as well as IBB TV. One hundred fireworks rockets launched from 3 boats located on the beaches of Ortaköy and Kuzguncuk for 3 minutes 30 seconds created a visual feast in the Bosphorus skies.

İmamoğlu, who participated in the live broadcast before the show, started his words by quoting Atatürk's Youth Address. Citing Atatürk's words, "O Turkish youth! Your first duty is to preserve and defend forever Turkish independence, the Turkish republic. This is the only foundation of your existence and future." He added: “So actually, freedom and the Republic exist side by side. The future and the reason for our existence, these feelings are very important. Ataturk has entrusted them to us. Today is May 19. May 19 is actually the beginning of hope, like a birthday. Our ancestors set out from Istanbul to Samsun, awakened the nation and the struggle for independence by the nation. And they entrusted this beautiful, heavenly homeland to us; Istanbul, Turkey’s  east, west, south and north, because I live in the north... so that we can line in Freedom, respect each other. We are grateful to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, we are grateful to his fellow soldiers and we are grateful to our history, ancestors, grandparents and grandmothers of this beautiful nation ... May 19 is precious for us. It is very special today day; because May 19 came the same day as Night of Qadr. I don't know how often they coincide. But I think there is a message for us today. In other words, the night of revelation of the Quran to Hz. Muhammad, our Prophet, is tonight and the first word of the Creator to our prophet is the first verse, "Ikra", that is, "Read". In other words, God shed light on the need of reason and science through our prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A tremendous meeting.”

May 19 is a national holiday and its full name is the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. It marks the date Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, arrived in the northern city of Samsun in 1919 to drum up support for his fight for the country’s independence amid the imminent collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Since 1938, the day originally dedicated to the War of Independence has also been celebrated as Youth and Sports Day.
