Project Submissions for the “Taksim Urban Design Competition” End on May 10

Applications for the International Taksim Urban Design Competition opened by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Cultural Heritage Department have begun. The deadline for first stage of project delivery is May 10, 2020.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is holding a design competition to reshape the city’s iconic Taksim Square. The applications for the “Taksim Urban Design Competition” started on March 2, 2020.

The competition will consist of two stages. In the first stage, city planners, architects or landscape architects will be able to submit their projects individually or in teams to IMM’s Cultural Assets Preservation Department until May 10, 2020.

The top twenty projects which pass the first stage of the competition, will then submit a second application with a new project by June 29, 2020.

The competition will be also open to foreign citizens, provided that the applicant team consists of at least one city planner, one architect, and one landscape architect.

The projects will be assessed by the jury starting on July 3, and the winners will be announced to the public with an award ceremony on July 18. The winners will receive 5,000 Euros each.

5,000 Euros will be awarded for each of the 20 projects that pass the first tier. Three designs that are selected from the projects that pass the second tier, will receive a reward of 50,000 Euros, while five honorable mention awards with a value of 10,000 Euros will also be distributed.

The jury, which will be headed by architect Kerem Piker, will consist of architect Ayşe Zeynep Ahunbay, architect İpek Akpınar Aksugür, urban planner Can Kubin, landscape architect Arzu Kutkam, architect Manuel de Rivero, and landscape architect Rainer Schmidt.

Jury consultants will consist of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu along with other municipality executives, including Mr. Mehmet Çakılcıoğlu, the deputy secretary-general of IMM; Mr. Mahir Polat, IMM Head of Cultural Assets Conservation; Mr. Tayfun Kahraman, Head of the Department of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement; Mr. Hayri Haydar Karabey, the architect; Mr. Korhan Gümüş; the architect; Mr. Ömer Yılmaz, Competition Coordinator of Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance – IPA.
