IMM Launches Istanbul Investment Agency: "Those Who Are Late, Will Regret It"

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu introduced the Istanbul Investment Agency (IIA), which he promised in his election campaign, with a launch he organized. Emphasizing that every institution should contribute to the promotion of Istanbul, İmamoğlu said, “We invite everyone those who are from every level of our state and every non-governmental organization of Istanbul, interested in our work, goals, our successes, and achievements. I visit every district municipality of this city. I knock on the door of every institution. Those who insist on not coming with us are left behind. They feel regret for not being able to keep up with our speed. For this reason, those who want to catch this speed, tolerance and development model that we have put forward should join us, let them not be late to do so. Those who are late, will be sad. I make my invitation from here again, from the microphone, in front of the cameras, so that they do not look back with regret. I hope they come with us willingly. Our door is wide open to serve you. These processes cannot be carried out by fear or apprehension. Let every institution which carries the name of Istanbul attend such meetings, and make contributions.”

Increasing the brand value of Istanbul, providing consultancy to investors planning to come to the city, creating a city with a high trust environment for investors and contributing to employment were determined as the primary objectives of the Istanbul Investment Agency. The IIA was introduced to the public with the launch held at the Haliç Congress Center. The launch brought together domestic and foreign financial institutions, and representatives from the investment, technology, tourism and as well as various other sectors. Foreign country diplomats were also intensively involved in the launch of the Istanbul Investment Agency (IIA). Mr. Buğra Kavuncu, Istanbul provincial chair of the opposition party (İYİ Party) was present at the meeting. The 3-minute film about Istanbul and its relations with investors was shown at the launch, which started with a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem.

Mr. Nihat Narin, head of the agency, for his part, invited international funds, entrepreneurs, private capital groups, and "anyone who wants to invest in Istanbul" to contribute to the development of the city with a population of 16 million.

Mr. Narin said that the transformation process in Istanbul, which has begun after the local elections held last year, created a positive atmosphere for the investors.

"With its 712 hotels, 238 hospitals, and 61 universities, hosting over one million students, Istanbul is waiting for new investments," he added.

Istanbul lures around 15 million tourists each year, and it is one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world and the third most traveled destination in Europe, Mr. Narin noted.

Ms. Laura Citron, CEO of London & Partner, also delivered a speech. Ms. Citron started her speech in Turkish, saying, “Hello. Istanbul is my second favorite city.” Speaking about the history, management scheme and experience of London & Partner, Citron, she gave examples of possible collaborations between Istanbul and London.

Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, who came to the microphone after Ms. Laura Citron expressed the reason for the establishment of IIA as follows:

"Istanbul is stepping up to the global stage," Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, said at the inauguration ceremony of the agency in Istanbul.

"The agency's founding goal is to turn Istanbul into a city that attracts more international investments and entrepreneurs, as well as foreign talents in the short and medium-term" he noted.

According to the mayor Imamoğlu, the new platform will determine and promote Istanbul's local dynamics to appeal to foreign investors in a wide range of sectors, including finance, technology, and tourism, with a "win-win spirit."

The mayor Imamoğlu also pledged to make the city a center of high technology, by significantly supporting software companies and coding firms.

"We will also focus on mass transportation investments, particularly increasing metro lines," Imamoglu said, highlighting the importance of new urban planning investments.

Expressing that it is enough to look at the world map to understand the value of Istanbul, Mayor İmamoğlu said: “Each of the important cities such as London, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Sydney, Milan make great efforts with investment and promotion agencies to attract talented minds and entrepreneurial classes. Based on the experience of metropolitan cities, we want to focus on the countries and cities in the profile of our important commercial partner for the development of this city within the body of IIA. We will listen to the voices of everyone in the industry. “Explaining the first 5-year goals of IIA and Istanbul, Mayor Imamoğlu stated that they will strengthen the city’s quality of being an investment, workable and visited world metropolis.

Stating that they will always be open, honest, based on mutual winning, reliable and solution-oriented communication with foreign investors, İmamoğlu said: “We will focus on mass transportation investments, especially metro. We will make planning and investments that will change the texture of the city because Istanbul is located on an important fault line. We will primarily develop institutions in high technology areas. We will support new technology companies, software, design, coding and training companies. We will be one of the leading cities in Istanbul in investments related to environmental investments, clean energy and the transformation of urban wastes. We will work together to ensure that it is among the top 3 in the world in the number of foreign visitors coming to the city. “
