IMM to Mark October 29 Republic Day with Citywide Events

Turkey’s Republic Day on October 29 will be celebrated by citywide events organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM). The celebrations will leave their mark on the whole city for two days.

For the first time in Istanbul this year, Republic Day celebrations will spread across the entire city, inspiring the 16 million citizens of Istanbul to come together around the values of the modern Republic of Turkey.

Prior to the celebrations, the city's main streets and concert areas will be decorated with Turkish flags, portraits of the founder of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and IMM flags. The concert areas in Sultanahmet, Üsküdar Beach, Tuzla, Umraniye Square, Sancaktepe, Gaziosmanpaşa, Güngören, Haznedar, Çatalca and Eyüp will be prepared for the special occasion.

Taksim Square, Saraçhane Park, Vatan Avenue, Unkapanı, Dolmabahçe Avenue, Bağdat Avenue and Altunizade (Capitol Shopping Mall and Millet Park) will be made ready for the big night. Decorated arches will be built in the entrances of Istiklal Avenue, Şemsi Paşa Square, Harem, Barbaros Boulevard, Sultanahmet Square, Valikonağı Avenue, Bağdat Avenue, Saraçhane and Nispetiye Avenue.

For the first time this year, the celebrations will last for two days in different locations of the city. The festivities will kick off on Monday 28 October with a lantern procession in front of the IMM building in Saraçhane, and continue into the night in Sultanahmet Square. The procession will end with concerts by renowned Turkish musicians Şevval Sam, Fahir Atakoğlu, Athena, Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra and Magma Philharmonic Orchestra in Sultanahmet Square. Various theatre performances will also be staged, focusing on the significance of the Republic Day.

This year, the center of the celebrations marking the occasion will be Üsküdar Square, where the events will kick off with a DJ performance and continue into the night. The program will feature Janissary band concerts as well as water, light, pyro, and laser shows. The IMM City Orchestra will take the stage after the fireworks show ends in Sarayburnu.

Various other concerts will liven up the night on 6 other smaller stages in Şemsi Paşa Square and Harem, where Turkish classical music, Turkish folk Music and Turkish pop music will be performed. A laser light show will leave its mark on the night, with 80 sky browsers on the beaches of Üsküdar, Fındıklı and Sarayburnu.

All public transport across the city will be free of charge on October 29 Republic Day.
