No Traffic Jams in Istanbul as New School Year Opens

About 3 million students and 200 thousand teachers started the new school year in Istanbul today, and traffic intensity remained below expected levels.

All public transport across Istanbul was free of charge today on the occasion of the new school year between 06.00 and 14:00.

No severe traffic congestion or accidents were recorded during the morning rush hour. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) took measures to prevent traffic congestion on the first day of the new school year. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu announced that public transportation will be free for a duration of 8 hours, and called out to commuters to opt for public transport on Monday.

The first semester of the 2019-2020 academic year will end on 17 January 2020 while the second semester is scheduled to begin on February 3 and end on June 19.

School-goers will enjoy their first break between 18-22 November 2019, and the mid-term break will be between 20-31 January 2020.

The students will take another break between April 6-10 in the second semester.

In May 2019, Turkey shortened the 13-week summer break for schools to 11 weeks in a move to increase efficiency in education.
