Mayor Imamoğlu Visits Fishermen Early in the Morning as Seasonal Fishing Ban Ends

With the end of the seasonal fishing ban, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu made an early-morning visit to the Gürpınar Fish and Seafood Market on September 2 to meet with fishermen as they threw their nets into the sea, calling out “Vira Bismillah" - a traditional seafarers’ saying, meaning “raising anchor in the name of God.”

Dressed in sportswear, the Mayor wore a cap inspired with İSYÖN, a subsidiary of the IMM.

Mayor İmamoğlu met with the fishermen in the early hours of Monday, September 2 at 4:30 AM. During his visit, the Mayor started the daily auction at the fish and seafood market and made a short speech to the fishermen.

“Friends, may God not bring you shame and may he give good luck to all of you. Hopefully, you will let our citizens eat plenty of fish at more affordable prices this season. I know that it’s not an easy job for seamen, fishmongers, fishermen and vendors. I know you work day and night. But we should protect the sea and all the life in it. If we follow the precautionary measures in fish-hunting, we can catch more fish next year,” the Mayor said in his speech.

Fishing season in Istanbul kicked off on September 1 after a four-and-a-half-month ban, as fishermen hope for a fruitful season.

During the visit, İmamoğlu was accompanied Mr. Mehmet Murat Çalık; the Mayor of Beylikdüzü district, Mr. Murat Yazıcı; the Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and Mr. Murat Ongun; the Mayoral advisor of the IMM.

The Mayor also held a meeting with sectoral representatives and listened to their problems and complaints. “We will act with common sense. We regard agriculture and animal husbandry in a similar way. Therefore, we will also evaluate the problems of fisheries by examining in detail how to deal with them. Hopefully, when the time comes, we will make the right decision together,” the Mayor said.
