Budapest Mayoral Candidate Karácsony to İmamoğlu: “You Are a Source of Hope for Budapest”

Mr. Gergely Karácsony, the Hungarian opposition candidate for Budapest mayor, visited Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in his Saraçhane Municipal office on Wednesday.

Addressing his guest, Mayor İmamoglu said: “You are standing as a candidate to become the mayor of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Budapest. This is a very sacred and valuable mission. I wish you success in your political journey.”

In response to the Mayor’s words, Mr. Karácsony explained that the local election result in Istanbul was closely followed by the Hungarian people. “Your success in Istanbul has had a huge impact on the Hungarian people and Budapest, and our people are very impressed with the result. The change in mayoral leadership in Istanbul has also become a source of hope for Budapest. If there is a possibility for such an essential change in Istanbul, there is a possibility for change also for Budapest,” Mr. Karácsony added.

Underlining that he had garnered the support of opposition parties in Budapest in similarity with İmamoğlu, he said: “There are serious similarities in the political structures of our countries. I see municipal service as a suitable arena for my political activities. I hope I can invite you to my city for an official visit in the near future.”

Mayor İmamoğlu wished the young mayoral candidate success on his political path, and noted, “Mayors are the ones who can address people in the most effective manner, and touch the lives of other people.  I have experienced this during five years of duty as a district mayor. You are also standing as a candidate to become the mayor for one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Budapest. This is a very sacred and valuable mission. To aspire for such a task would, of course, require a great deal of responsibility.”

Mentioning that he had previously visited Budapest, and acknowledging the age-old historical ties between the Turkish and Hungarian peoples, the Mayor added: “In this new period, I wish to establish beautiful, tight links with your city. Perhaps this task will be your fortune and we will [together] work to establish these ties. We will further strengthen our bond. I wish you success in advance.”

In the afternoon, Mayor İmamoğlu met with Ms. Paula Leal da Silva, the Ambassador of Portugal to Ankara. Ms. Da Silva thanked the Mayor for accepting her and wished him success in his new position.
