An Interesting Atatürk Story from Indian Ambassador: “Atatürk Gifted 41 Books to Our Nobel-Laureate Poet”

H.E. Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Ambassador of India to Ankara, paid a congratulatory visit to Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on Monday and told of a memoir of Rabindranath Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature with his novel "Gora" in 1913, with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

H.E. Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Ambassador of India to Turkey paid a congratulatory visit to IMM Mayor Ekrem Imamoglue on Monday and told a memoir of Indian Nobel Laurate Rabidranath Tagore with Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Ambassador Bhattacharyya said, “We have a long relationship with Istanbul even before the declaration of our independence. Our poet Rabindranath Tagore, who had won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel ‘Gora’ in 1913, visited Istanbul in 1922.” He added, “During that visit, Nobel Laurate Tagore met Kemal Atatürk, Father of Turks. On that occasion, Ataturk gave him 41 books. These books are still on display at Visva-Bharti University founded by Tagore with a note saying, “It is the gift of the Turkish people.”

Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu hosted H.E. Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Ambassador of India to Turkey and H.E. Ms. Daria Darnell, the Consul General of the US to Istanbul in Sarachane City Hall and accepted their congratulations. İmamoğlu received his special guests separately and expressed his gratitude for their visits.

The mayor’s first visitor was H.E. Mr. Sanjay Bhattacharyya and his accompanying delegation. At the beginning of the meeting, the Mayor welcomed Ambassador Bhattacharyya and his accompanying delegation, described today’s meeting with the Indian Ambassador Sanjay Bhattacharya as “very productive” for Istanbul. The Mayor vowed to cooperate on innovation projects, forge sisterhood ties between Istanbul and Mumbai, and thanked them for their sincere dialogue.

Ambassador Bhattacharyya said that they (India) support the national liberation struggle of Turkey. “We really see the Turkish people as our brothers. Mahatma Gandhi also collected funds from the Indian people to support the Turkish people at that time.  They had collected 180 thousand pounds and this was used in the War of Turkish Independence during the times of Atatürk. It was also used as the capital of İşbank AŞ. In fact, we have deep ties between the two countries. We also represent two important countries in the 21st century. Turkey has changed a lot in the last 10 years and made a big economic progress. India had the same economic productivity in the same period. It is one of the fastest-growing countries in the world. There is a transformation among our people. Especially when we look at young people, we accumulate a serious capital. Our young people are hopeful and I think that they will achieve very serious successes for the future. In this sense, I believe that the relations between Istanbul and India should be deepened and the two countries should take necessary steps aimed at liberalization of trade and investments and accelerate the improvement of world economy. Because Turkey is going through similar processes. It is undergoing a similar transformation and has a growing, rapidly developing economy,” the guest Indian Ambassador Sanjay Bhattacharyya added.

After the Indian delegation departed, the second visitor to congratulate Mayor Imamoglu was Ms. Daria Darnell, the Consul General of the US to Istanbul. Ms. Darnell and her accompanying delegation paid a congratulatory visit to Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in his working office in Saraçhane, Istanbul.

Mayor İmamoğlu expressed his satisfaction for the visit of Ms. Darnell and said, “I am honored to welcome you here today. We are two countries that have had long and friendly relations in both economic and commercial fields for many years. Turkey and the US have been allies and strategic partners. We have deeprooted relations, extensive cooperation on wide-ranging issues, and a long history of solidarity. I think that relations with local governments should be strengthened and I feel that there is some deficiency in this respect. At this occasion, we want Istanbul’s doors be open to the world. After all, the relations we are going to establish with you are very valuable for us,” the mayor said.

During their talks at the mayor’s office, Mayor İmamoğlu offered his deep condolences to Ms. Daria Darnell and the American people over the chaotic mass shooting that took place in the US’s northeastern city of Dayton, Ohio yesterday.

At the end of the visit, Ms. Darnell presented a US Women’s Soccer jersey inscribed with “World Champions”, following the team’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Victory. The Mayor accepted the jersey on behalf of “all women athletes in Turkey.
