Şerefiye Cistern hosting occasional, free, public Baroque concerts

The cistern will be hosting occasional, free, public Baroque concerts in coming days.

Şerefiye Cistern has just been opened to the public after a hibernation of centuries and following a renovation that took eight years to finish by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM).

The first of the series of concerts, which will continue throughout the year, will meet with music lovers on January 12th, 2018. Participation in concerts will be free.

The event is organized together with the IMM’S Department of Culture and Culture Co., a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. “Chamber Music Recital Series” and “Early and Baroque Concerts Series” will be performed at the cistern.

Ethnomusicologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehtap Demir will perform the from Istanbul's music culture. This concert is a cultural music journey. These songs have been inherited from the palace and its surroundings from the 16th century to the present day. The concert also gives a great deal of space to the Istanbul songs that were inherited from the Ottoman period, the Sephardic and Greek music surrounding the Istanbul music culture. The explanations regarding the works will be done in Turkish and English on January 12th, 2018.

Aslıhan And, lecturer at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University İstanbul State Conservatory and flutist at İstanbul State Opera and Ballet, and Tolga Kulak, the violinist at İzmir State Opera and Ballet will represent a musical journey by gathering the euphonious tone of flute and violin amongst the Baroque and Classical era by interpreting pieces from Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Marie Leclair, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Franz Anton Hoffmeister on January 19th, 2018.

Aslıhan And and Tolga Kulak will appear on the stage with a concert called “Journey from Classical to Baroque” on Saturday, January 19 at 18:00 p.m. Flute and violin recital players will perform the works of Georg Philipp Telemann, Jean-Marie Leclair, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach ve Franz Anton Hoffmeister.

“Sufi Music Concert” called “Journey with love Dervish Yunus Emre” will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2018, at 18.00 p.m. Yunus Emre's works on divine love will be performed by Ms. Serap Farmer, who is Antalya State Opera and Ballet Artist, Mezzo-Soprano. Participating in classical music concerts on Saturdays are free of charge.

Visitors can also visit the Cistern free of charge, which has a history of 1,600 years.
