Mayor Uysal: “There will always be place for disabled to live and work”

Mevlüt Uysal, the mayor of Istanbul met with disabled citizens and with their parents at the annual World Disability Day in Istanbul today. Mayor Uysal: “In 1994, the fate of our disabled people, like the fate of Istanbul, began to change thanks to our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. We, as the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) always have the responsibility to do the best for the disabled people.”

Traditional World Day of Disabled Persons Meeting organized under the coordination of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality was held with the participation of Mayor Mevlüt Uysal at the Deniz Köşk Meeting and Banquet Hall. Yaşar Karaarslan, Chairman of AK Party Avcılar District; Lokman Ayva, a visually impaired former member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Osman Cakmak, Captain of  Amputee National Team; IMM Sports Club disabled athletes, IMM’s related bureaucrats and almost a thousand people with disabilities and their families attended the event. Modern dance and folk dance shows also were performed by disabled people during the event.

An estimated 20 million disabled people live in Turkey

Mayor Uysal said in his speech, “today is the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). Actually, today is a day for all of us to come together to build a strong relationship. Each individual is either disabled, has a disabled relative or a candidate for disability. Thus, it is necessary to provide suitable conditions to enable disabled individuals to live in concert with the society. According to a study, the population of the disabled people in Turkey is 7 % including those with chronic diseases. This includes over 20 million people with their families. They make up almost a quarter of our population. Unfortunately, the disability that affected so many people was ignored for a long time and they were not taken care of as expected. In 1994, the fate of our disabled people, like the fate of Istanbul, began to change thanks to our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. We thank him very much for his service.”

Disabled Camp will be throughout the year

Mayor Uysal stated that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has a great responsibility for the disabled to be more active in social, cultural and economic life directly and he continued, “Mr. President had started his first work on disabled people at the Metropolitan Municipality. Then we, as the IMM always have to do the best we can. We have such a responsibility. This is something we have done so far and we will continue to do so. Our summer camp has been going on since 1994. The camp in Şile district was opened. Good luck with it.”

There will be no place that the disabled people won’t reach out

Mayor noted that as the Metropolitan Municipality, we have to transform the city more easily reachable for the people with disabilities. He said, “we have to continue to convert all of the pavements, streets, schools, mosques, hospitals, municipal buildings. So far, a great distance has been covered. Hopefully, there will be no place that the disabled people will not reach out in the city. You should be involved in all kinds of activities such as sports and social activities. I hope you will continue in your good work. As IMM, we have audio libraries, where volunteers read books for the blind or physically people. Audiobooks can be listened to at any time at the library. Disabled also can listen to books anywhere they want via the internet.” he added.

Mayor Uysal, ”We continue working with all our strengths to make Istanbul an accessible, disabled-friendly city and enable disabled citizens to wander around the city easily and participate in life,” he said.
