Istanbul Hosts Muslim Scholars

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 5th General Assembly of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Mevlüt Uysal said that, as members of a religion sent to bring peace and tranquility to all mankind, we could find solutions to humanity's problems. But we have to deal with our own issues first. Then we can supply the solution that Islam offers, to all humanity. And you, scholars, will make this come true, I believe.

The 5th General Assembly of the International Union of Muslim Scholars began in Istanbul with the participation of some thousand Islamic scholars from many countries including Turkey.

Mayor Mevlüt Uysal, the Chairman of Religious Affairs Ali Erbaş and the Chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars Yusuf Al-Qaradawi addressed the scholars in the opening ceremony.

Stating there is no other city than Istanbul that has been the capital of 3 great civilizations in his speech, mayor Uysal said, "as Islamic scholars of the world, you are more than a guest for us. Because Istanbul, which has been the capital of Islam for centuries, is your home."

"Scholars are heirs of the Prophets, the ones who transmit the message from generation to generation. At the same time, they are the ones who find solutions to every kind of issues. Even in desperate times, Islam does not find it right to despair. As scholars, you know this better than anyone else. You dig for the truth all the time, but more importantly in desperate times, you are the ones who will show the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that the joint work you will do here will be an opportunity for a solution to the problems of the Islamic world. As members of a religion sent to bring peace and tranquility to all mankind, we could find solutions to humanity's problems. But of course, we have to deal with our own issues first. Then we can supply the solution that Islam offers, to all humanity. And you, scholars, will make this come true, I believe," he added.

Uysal underlined the importance of the meeting being held in Istanbul, which has been the capital of Islam for centuries, in these troubled times.

"Today's troubles and obstacles are no different than the ones we have experienced and overcomed in the past. There is a struggle to eliminate the peace, tranquility, and mercy of Islam. Therefore, the responsibility of the scholars is more now. Talking about the problems and looking for a solution is actually the most important part of the process. The darkest hour is just before the dawn. So I think we are getting close to the solution since we have so many problems as the Ummah. Though every Muslim has a responsibility, however, the greatest responsibility falls on scholars' shoulders," he said.

Yusuf Al-Qaradawî, Chairman of the Union, presented a calligraphy drawing of Ayah 39 from Surah Al-Ahzab as a gift to Mevlut Uysal. The Palestinian Scholars also gave a gift to the mayor at the end of the ceremony.

Around one thousand Muslim scholars from many countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, China, USA, Ethiopia, Morocco, Palestine, India, Netherlands, Iraq, United Kingdom, Canada, Kosovo, Libya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Russia, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia and Turkey are participating in 5th General Assembly of the International Union of Muslim Scholars which will continue in Şişli Cevahir Hotel until November 9.
