Over 2,500 people swim in Cross-Continental Race across Istanbul’s Bosphorus...

Over 2,400 swimmers from 50 countries will take part in the 30th BosphorusCross-Continental Swimming Race to be held on July 22, 2018.

A total of 4,430 people have applied to take part in this year’s race. Of this figure, 3,269 are men and 1,161 are women. After eliminations, 2,400 swimmers have earned the right to participate in the competition, which will bring together sports enthusiasts for what is known as “the only inter-continental swimming race in the world.”

The race will start in the Kanlıca neighborhood on the Asian side and end in Kuruçeşme on the European side. A total of over 2,500 people from around 50 countries will take part in the swim, 1,002 of whom were Turkish swimmers. 

The race has been organized by the Turkish Olympic Committee 
(TOC) with the support of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM)  since 1989. It is the world’s only intercontinental swimming competition.

The race will start in the Kanlıca neighborhood on the Asian side and end in Kuruçeşme on the European side. A total of over 2,500 people from around 50 countries will take part in the swim, 1,002 of whom were Turkish swimmers. 

The Bosphorus will be completely closed to passing ships throughout the course of the race.
 

On July 22, the race commences at 8:30 a.m. from Kanlıca, the Asian side of Istanbul, and will finish at Kuruçeşme, on the other side of the city.

The Bosphorus will be closed to boats during the course of the race and all safety measures, including ambulance boats and jet-skis, will present in the case of any safety or health-related issues occurring.
 

In this year’s competition, Russian swimmers showed the highest interest from abroad. They were followed by Ukranian, British, and American swimmers.

Over the years, the race has become a true international brand. In 2016, the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) declared it to be the World Open Water Swimming Offering of the Year.
